Arabic chicken shawarma sandwich recipe

Shawarma is a Syrian Arabic meat dish in which meat is put on a spit and may be grilled for a day. Shawarma can be served with various toppings and vegetables such as tahini, amba, hummus or pickles. It is mostly wrapped in pita bread. This dish is often wrapped in pita bread. Because we do not have a rotating spit at home, this recipe is baked on the stove.


3 tablespoons Greek yogurt
3 tablespoons chile sauce
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons barbeque sauce (such as HP)
1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
4 cloves garlic, minced
½ teaspoon ground white pepper
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1 pound boneless chicken breast, cut into cubes
½ cup Greek yogurt
3 tablespoons tahini
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 cloves garlic, chopped
½ teaspoon ground white pepper
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup cooking oil
6 pita bread rounds
½ head cabbage, finely shredded
1 onion, cut into matchstick-size pieces
2 pickled cucumbers, sliced


Step 1
Combine 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt, vinegar, barbecue sauce, chili sauce, sauce, soy sauce, chopped garlic, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, white pepper and cinnamon. Then add the chicken and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 2
Mix 1/2 cup Greek yogurt, lemon juice, chopped garlic, Tahini, 1/2 teaspoon white pepper and salt until smooth.

Step 3
Heat the cooking oil over high heat. Now fry the chicken in hot oil for 12 to 15 minutes until the middle of the chicken is not pink.

Step 4
Bake both sides of the pita bread on a flat skillet over medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes until golden.

Step 5
Spread the sauce on the pita bread. Put chicken, onion, pickles and cabbage on the sauce. Now wrap the sandwiches with greaseproof paper or aluminum foil.
